Dead & Company’s three-night run at Folsom Field in Boulder, Colorado on July 1, 2, and 3, 2023 was a monumental event. It was nearing the conclusion on “The Final Tour,” leading directly toward an emotional finale in San Francisco in two weeks.
The shows were noted for their deep jamming, diverse setlists, and high energy.
Here is a breakdown of all three nights:
Night 1: Saturday, July 1, 2023
The first night set a high bar for the weekend with an inventive setlist and heavy improvisational highlights.
Opener Suite: The show kicked off with an energetic “Let the Good Times Roll” and a jam that went from “Truckin'” into Howlin’ Wolf’s “Smokestack Lightning.”
Massive ‘Eyes’: The second set opened with an expansive “Eyes of the World” that stretched out to nearly 20 minutes, featuring extended improvisation.
Rare Jazz: The inclusion of the Miles Davis instrumental “Milestones” coming out of Space was a delightful surprise.
Night 2: Sunday, July 2, 2023
Night two delivered a marathon performance with a well-curated setlist that touched on several eras of the Grateful Dead’s catalog, earning high praise from attendees.
The show featured an incredible flow in both sets, with the second set building into a towering performance.
The final run of “Uncle John’s Band” into the fan-favorite suite “Help on the Way” > “Slipknot!” > “Franklin’s Tower” created a monumental peak for the night, ending with the emotional closer “Morning Dew” before the single-song encore.
Night 3: Monday, July 3, 2023
The final night in Boulder was a grand finale, complete with a weather delay, a classic “Playing in the Band” bookend, and a surprise celebrity guest.
A lightning delay forced the band to cut short the first set. After the delay, they famously finished “Playing in the Band” to open the second set before moving into “Uncle John’s Band.”
Special Guest: Dave Matthews joined the band for the final songs of the second set, sitting in on “All Along the Watchtower” and “Not Fade Away,” and then returned for the double-encore.
The show concluded with a tearful, four-man sing-along (Weir, Mayer, Burbridge, and Matthews) on “The Weight” and the powerful, spiritual closure of “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door.”
