The Dead & Company concert in Philadelphia on “The Final Tour” took place on Thursday, June 15, 2023, at Citizens Bank Park, the home of the Philadelphia Phillies.
The show was a significant stop, as Philadelphia has a long history with the Grateful Dead (most notably a record number of sold-out shows at the legendary Spectrum arena). The atmosphere was celebratory, with fans knowing this would likely be the band’s last performance in the city.
The concert featured a well-balanced setlist, highlighted by a divided version of a foundational Grateful Dead jam vehicle and two songs making their 2023 tour debut.
Highlights:
The opening was an immediate treat with the tour debut of the reggae-infused “Man Smart, Woman Smarter.”
Bob Weir then brought out the acoustic guitar for another tour debut, the Marty Robbins cowboy tune “El Paso.”
The second set began with a joyous “Fire on the Mountain,” featuring bassist Oteil Burbridge’s soulful lead vocals, a staple of his contributions to the band.
The Singalong Closer: The set proper closed with a very emotional rendition of “Standing on the Moon,” followed by the audience participation classic “Not Fade Away,” with the crowd continuing the chant long after the music stopped.
The show closed with the hopeful and poignant acoustic ballad “Ripple,” a frequent encore on “The Final Tour,” serving as a perfect send-off from the City of Brotherly Love.
