Wolf Brothers in New Orleans

Bob Weir and Wolf Bros recently graced the historic Saenger Theatre in New Orleans for a two-night stand (November 22–23, 2024) that redefined the “jam band” experience. Far from a standard rock show, these performances featured the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra (LPO) and the Wolfpack (a specialized horn and string section), turning Grateful Dead classics into sweeping, cinematic movements.

The Atmosphere: Elegance Meets the “Dead” Scene

The Saenger Theatre, with its ornate Italian Renaissance decor and “starry night” ceiling, provided a regal backdrop for a crowd that was a mix of tie-dyed veterans and symphony-goers. While the usual “Shakedown Street” lot scene was minimal due to the downtown location, the energy inside was electric.

The Performance: A Symphony of Dead

The collaboration with the LPO, featuring arrangements by Dr. Giancarlo Aquilanti, was the centerpiece of the run.

  • The Wolf Bros Core: Bob Weir (guitar/vocals), Don Was (upright bass), Jay Lane (drums), and Jeff Chimenti (keys) provided the rhythmic skeleton, though with the orchestra present, they often played with more restraint, acting as a part of the larger ensemble.

  • The Sound: Hearing “Dark Star” or “Terrapin Station” fleshed out by 75 musicians was transformative. The LPO didn’t just play background chords; they engaged in the improvisation. During “The Other One,” the brass section mimicked the cadence of Jerry Garcia’s iconic guitar lines, creating a haunting, layered effect.

  • Standout Moments: * “Stella Blue”: Turned into a lush, heartbreaking torch ballad that brought a hushed silence to the theater.

    • “Sugar Magnolia”: A high-energy closer where the orchestra played a Baroque-style variation of the main riff before the band exploded back in.

    • “Brokedown Palace”: Performed with a funereal, brass-heavy weight that felt like a spiritual moment for the New Orleans crowd.
