The Dead Ahead Festival 2025

Imagine trading chilly winter winds for swaying palm trees, the familiar hum of traffic for the rhythmic crash of Caribbean waves, and the usual concert hall for an open-air stage on a white-sand beach. That’s the magic of Dead Ahead, Bob Weir’s incredible all-inclusive music festival in Riviera Cancun, Mexico, and let me tell you, it’s an experience unlike any other!

Having just returned from this musical paradise, I’m still buzzing from the good vibes. Dead Ahead isn’t just a concert; it’s a full-fledged vacation where the music of the Grateful Dead and its vast universe serves as the soundtrack to five days of pure bliss.

The Moon Palace Oasis: Your Home for the Jam

The festival is held at the stunning Moon Palace Golf & Spa Resort, a sprawling, luxurious all-inclusive property. This isn’t your typical bare-bones festival ground; it’s a true resort experience. From the moment you arrive, you’re enveloped in comfort. My package included everything: incredible resort accommodations, roundtrip airport transportation, and perhaps most importantly for a music lover, bottomless top-shelf drinks and all-inclusive culinary offerings. Yes, you read that right – unlimited delicious food and refreshing beverages throughout your stay!

The resort itself is massive, with various sections (Sunrise, Nizuc, The Grand) offering different amenities and vibes, but all with access to gorgeous pools, stunning beaches, and 24-hour room service. It’s perfect for both relaxation and adventure. I spent my days lounging by the pool, trying out a guacamole-making class, and even taking a quick dip in the ocean between sets. They also have activities like yoga, mezcal tastings, beach volleyball, and endless music from multiple stages.

Music Under the Mexican Sky: The Core Experience

But let’s be honest, we’re here for the music! The main stage is set up right on the beach, creating an absolutely surreal and intimate concert venue. Imagine dancing barefoot in the sand, the stars overhead, and the sound of the ocean mingling with the iconic tunes of Bob Weir and his incredible band. It’s truly something special.

The core of Dead Ahead is three nights of collaboration featuring Bobby Weir, Sturgill Simpson, Rick Mitarotonda (Goose), Jeff Chimenti, Oteil Burbridge, Don Was, and Jay Lane, often joined by special guests like Brittney Spencer and Grace Bowers. This lineup alone is a dream come true for any fan of improvisational music. Hearing these musicians weave their magic through the Grateful Dead songbook, often with fresh interpretations and extended jams, is pure joy.

Beyond the main headlining sets, the festival offers a fantastic array of additional performances. I caught sets from Oteil & Friends (including a special Jerry Garcia Band tribute!), Trampled By Turtles performing the music of Old & In The Way, a rocking marathon set from Sturgill Simpson, the soulful Joy Oladokun, and the funky piano wizardry of Neal Francis. There are also often late-night DJs and other surprise performances, ensuring the music never truly stops. The variety means there’s always something new to discover, even within the familiar musical landscape.

The Vibe: Community and Connection

What struck me most about Dead Ahead, beyond the music and the luxurious setting, was the palpable sense of community. This isn’t a massive, sprawling festival where you feel lost in the crowd. It’s a more intimate gathering of like-minded individuals, all sharing a love for this unique brand of music. People traded stories, shared laughs, and danced together with an undeniable camaraderie. There’s a real “family reunion” feel to it, and that connection makes the entire experience even more special.
