Puerto Montt – Frutillar

Nestled on the western banks of Lake Llanquihue, Frutillar feels like a slice of the Bavarian Alps that was accidentally dropped into the heart of Southern Chile. With the perfectly symmetrical, snow-capped Osorno Volcano looming across the water, it is easily one of the most photogenic towns in the Lake District.

The Charm of Frutillar Bajo

The town is split into two parts, but you’ll want to spend most of your time in Frutillar Bajo (the lower part). This lakeside area is a living museum of German colonial architecture.

  • The Architecture: Stroll along the Costanera (the waterfront) to see perfectly preserved 19th-century wooden houses adorned with colorful gardens and manicured lawns.
  • The Pier: No visit is complete without walking the wooden pier. It provides an unobstructed view of the Osorno, Puntiagudo, and Calbuco volcanoes. On a clear day, the reflection of the peaks in the deep blue lake is breathtaking.

A City of Music

Frutillar is officially a UNESCO Creative City of Music, and you can feel that heritage everywhere.

Teatro del Lago

Rising right out of the lake, the Teatro del Lago is a masterpiece of modern architecture. It is one of South America’s most important concert halls, known for its world-class acoustics. Even if you aren’t catching a performance of the Semanas Musicales (Musical Weeks), the guided tour of the interior—with its intricate woodwork and panoramic windows—is worth every Chilean Peso.

A Taste of Tradition: Kuchen and Coffee

The German influence is perhaps most obvious in the town’s culinary scene. You cannot leave Frutillar without trying Kuchen.

  • The Ritual: Visit one of the many onces (tea rooms) along the waterfront.
  • What to Order: Look for Kuchen de Murta (a local berry) or the classic apple strudel. Pair it with a strong coffee while looking out at the lake.
  • Museo Colonial Alemán: To see how the early settlers lived, visit this open-air museum. It features a traditional water mill, a blacksmith shop, and a stunning colonial mansion, all set within a botanical park.
